SPIROMETRY

WHAT IS IT?

Spirometry is a simple and reliable respiratory test.

WHY SHOULD WE HAVE SPIROMETRY TESTING?

This test measures how much air you can blow from your lungs and how fast you blow it out. It helps your doctor detect if your lungs are functioning normally or if you have a disease, such as COPD or asthma.

HOW IS THE TEST DONE?

We will ask you to take deep breaths and then blow into a mouthpiece. It is a painless test but taking multiple deep breaths might make you dizzy or cough. If so, you simply need to sit for a few minutes, until you feel you’re breathing normally.

HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR THE TEST?

– Do not drink alcohol at least four hours before the test.
– Do not eat a large meal at least two hours of test.
– Wear loose clothing.
– Do not perform vigorous exercise for at least 30 minutes before the test.
– If you are on puffer medications, ask if you have to stop taking your puffer(s) before the test.
